Be your own motivator
There are all kinds of motivational theories.. However it is by becoming our own motivators that we shall remain eternally successful. Let us work towards this in the coming year and always.
A while ago, my son was extremely depressed as he could not get into a college he badly wanted to. He thought of switching to a different field. My husband and I told him he could do whatever he wanted to but asked him not to let a mere college admission influence his life. I shared the story of my late mother- in- law who could not play violin due to premature rheumatoid arthritis but switched to vocal music as music was indeed her passion. She did this not to satisfy anyone but herself and enjoyed music in new circumstances. My son then thought deeply and went to another college where he enjoyed both his studies and life. Till today, he recounts this decision as the best decision of his life and even uses this to guide others in their decision making.
On another note, my son was usually laidback while my daughter often got stressed. I needed to handle both of them differently. In fact, when my children were young, I followed a star system where I would give them a star for anything they did well and asked them to aim for more everyday. This worked very well instead of scolding and badgering them like I used to do earlier. In fact, even my friends started doing the same after seeing the improvement in our house.
In the new era, we always wish to prove something to others but do not look deep inside ourselves to understand our own selves. However, in most cases, true success stories are only those who focus on themselves and their needs not on others. This is not selfishness but building one’s self esteem for we know we are our own bosses and motivators.
Acceptance and appreciation
We all are unique beings, in other words, a unique piece of creation. Like the protagonist says in the famous bollywood movie, Three Idiots, Lata Mangeshkar, a famous singer would have failed miserably if she had been asked to play cricket and Sachin Tendulkar, a great cricket player would have failed miserably if he had been asked to follow the path of music.. We need to understand this and accept our uniqueness while appreciating our strengths and working on our limitations if we wish to.
We could design our own plan of action by making a list of things we need to work, while noting down the areas we need to improve on. For instance, all athletes maintain a chart of their own speed every day and compete with their own past performance and compete with others only after this. We could do the same in all the areas where we wish to improve ourselves in, be it cooking, cleaning, reading, gardening or anything else..
This would be much better than competing with everyone else in the world for that is bound to make us feel depressed and low as it is a human tendency to reach for something that is much above us. While this could make us do better sometimes, it also has the potential of causing too much stress and anxiety.
Instead, in all areas, we need to know we are our bosses and therefore need to please ourselves more than anyone else. This is how the creator will be pleased with his creation.
