An International Institute of Integrated Medicine could soon be a new feather in Bangalore’s cap. Dr. Issac Mathai, Managing Trustee of Soukya Foundation, and his team are in talks with the state government to set up this institute of higher learning on a public-private participation basis. This was announced at the first International conference titled ‘Global Health Futures’ held in the city in the month of November.
The three-day conference was supported by WHO, Ministry of Health, Government of India and Karnataka state, and Department of AYUSH. The main highlights were the sessions on the need to have a conference about integrated medicine by Dr. Michael Dixon, Chair College of Medicine, UK; lifestyle changes and reverse aging by the well known Prof. Dean Ornish, MD and Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California (San Francisco), who popularised the concept of bypassing the bypass through holistic and lifestyle changes. “The answer to a healthy future lies in integrating traditional methods and medicines with modern medicine,” said Sir Graeme Catto, President of the College of Medicine, UK. Prof Dean Ornish emphasised that the limitations of high-tech medicines are becoming clear while the power of ‘low-tech’ (traditional) medicine is such that it can prevent or even reverse chronic diseases.
The event also witnessed the book launch of Dr. Issac Mathai’s Holistic Healing – A doctor’s guide to rediscovering health and happiness naturally. In this comprehensive, illustrated guide to holistic healing, Dr. Mathai guides one towards a holistic life and achieving complete mind-body-spirit harmony.
He also reveals various alternative healing methods while taking a critical look at Western medicine, and our unquestioning acceptance of the Western way of life.
