Swami Nigamananda Saraswati, a member of Matri Sadan, an ashram on the banks of Ganga in Haridwar, had been on a fast since February 19, 2011, to protest the illegal mining that is adding to the pollution of the Ganga.
The Swami recently went into coma and had to be admitted to the Jolly Grant Hospital in Dehradun on April 27, 2011. His condition is considered to be critical. Yogacharya Swami Ramdev reportedly visited the hospital to enquire after Swami Nigamananda's health. Matri Sadan has been struggling to save Ganga from illegal mining for the past 12 years. Swami Nigamanand Saraswati had earlier gone on a fast from Jan 20, 2008 to April 1, 2008 which met with success as stone mining was banned. However, after some months, it began again. Worryingly, medical reports of Swami Nigamananda reveal that there was presence of insecticide poison in Swami’s body. The report was released to the media by Himalayan Institute. Vijay Verma, the council president and one of the Swami’s disciples told mediapersons in Dehradun, 'The Satyagrahi Swami Nigamananda has been admitted to hospital and is struggling to survive.”
