Ayurveda made easy
November 2013 An Easy Guide to Ayurveda: The Natural Way to Wholeness Roy Eugene Davis B Jain Publishers, 160 pages, Paperback, INR 75
Roy Eugene Davis is an American teacher of meditation and spiritual growth processes. He first published the contents of this guide as a series of lessons for members of the retreat in Georgia that he has founded. This book presents ayurveda – the ancient Indian system of healing – in a simple and direct way. There are many texts that go into great detail about the physical treatments in ayurveda and the complex relationship between body, mind and spirit that are involved. A central goal of ayurveda is to identify a person’s ideal state of balance, determine where they are out of balance, and offer interventions using a variable mix of diet, herbs, aromatherapy, massage treatments, music, and meditation to restore the balance. Davis presents the basic balancing ideas briefly but in easy-to-digest language. A panoramic sweep presented in an evolutionary way, the five sections progressively describe ayurveda’s essential nature – from basic principles, understanding and balancing one’s mind-body constitution, choosing food and habits to nurture inner balance and spiritual growth, practising routines for physical and mental cleansing to rejuvenation, enlightened living and consciousyur immortality. Throughout the book, we are reminded that health is the balanced and dynamic integration between our environment, body, mind, and spirit, and that a consciousness of the interplay of the three basic elements determines our state of well-being. A surprising bonus is in the 25-page appendix – which describes the “inner world of colours, gemstones, metals and mantras” and how these can have life-enhancing properties when included judiciously in our lifestyles and choices.
