Combatting cancer and creating clean air through aquaponics
While Delhi is still battling pollution, this couple has created a sustainable sanctuary with air as clean as the Himalayas.
The couple’s journey began with Neeno’s cancer diagnosis. They wished to adopt a better lifestyle and explored many things. After exploring many options, they found aquaponics—a system that combines fish farming and soil-free plant cultivation—very suitable. Today, their home in Delhi is wonderful and has 15,000 plants, all grown without soil or chemical fertilisers.
Even as almost everyone in Delhi struggles under a toxic blanket of smog, Peter Singh and Neeno Kaur’s home emerges as a beacon of hope and greenery.
The air in their home is extremely clean and also stays cool even during Delhi’s peak summer heat. The air quality is shown in the image below.
The secret lies in their aquaponic setup, which has four large fish tanks. The water from the tanks nourishes the plants, which, in turn, purify the water before it cycles back to the tanks. This is incredibly water-efficient, using just 1,000 litres daily recycling every drop.
Apart from this, they grow their own vegetables, maize, and herbs, ensuring a steady supply of fresh produce and minimal reliance on the market.They do all that is sustainable - they use kitchen waste that is composted into organic fertilisers, rainwater is harvested, and greywater is recycled to reduce their environmental footprint further.
Apart from leading a green lifestyle, Neeno has been cancer-free since 2010.
They are actively working to spread awareness and solutions. They are introducing aquaponics across schools in Delhi and even hold online classes to inspire others to adopt sustainable practices.
Their story is proof that individual action can bring about profound change both at the personal and societal level. Further, Their story reminds us that a better, greener future is possible and we can combat any ailment, even cancer, with a healthy lifestyle.
