Turkmenistan fixing methane leaks
Turkmenistan has indeed started fixing its massive methane leaks, which is a significant development since the country has long been one of the world's largest sources of these emissions. Recent reports indicate that actions are being taken to address the issue, with some major leaks successfully stopped.

The process follows a pattern of international satellite detection, followed by domestic or coordinated mitigation efforts.
Satellite identification of 'super-emitters': Studies using satellite data have identified Turkmenistan as a major global methane hotspot. For example, a 2022 NASA study detected a cluster of 12 plumes from oil and gas infrastructure, some stretching over 32 kilometers, with a collective emission rate rivaling major U.S. leaks. Researchers have found that many of these leaks originate from easily-fixable sources, like inactive flares and old pipelines.
Successful mitigation through international alerts: There are confirmed instances of successful action. The International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) reported that a major leak, once ranked as the world's 49th largest source, was stopped. The leaking pipeline had been emitting an estimated 16,000 tonnes of methane, equivalent to the annual emissions of about 310,000 cars. After operators took action and satellites confirmed the lack of emissions, the source dropped off the ranking.
Government and industry involvement: The Turkmen government has shown a willingness to address the problem. A 2023 report noted that state oil and gas companies were implementing plans to introduce innovative technologies to reduce methane emissions. Furthermore, a 2025 meeting between Turkmen officials, the World Bank, and space research organizations explored how to use satellite data for a systematic "alert, repair, and verification" approach to tackle leaks.
While the "hellish" Darvaza gas crater, also known as the "Door to Hell," is a famous and dramatic example of Turkmenistan's natural gas "leakage," it's a natural feature, not the industrial leaks that are the focus of recent mitigation efforts. The progress is centered on controllable man-made infrastructure.
This progress is a significant step, as the leaks were a massive source of potent greenhouse gas emissions. The work to fix them, led by a combination of international satellite monitoring and national action, represents a tangible effort to meet climate goals like the Global Methane Pledge.
