Europe adopts biomimicry

Biomimicry is a practice that learns from and mimics the strategies found in nature to solve human design challenges, with a core focus on creating more sustainable and regenerative solutions . Instead of just extracting resources from nature, biomimicry views nature as a mentor and a vast library of proven solutions, refined over 3.8 billion years of evolution .

The Core Philosophy
The term and modern movement were popularized by Janine Benyus in her 1997 book, Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature . The practice is guided by three core values known as the "Ethos, (Re)connect, and Emulate" .
Ethos: The underlying intention to respect and learn from nature, driven by a sense of responsibility.
(Re)connect: A mindset and practice of deepening our understanding and relationship with the natural world.
Emulate: The scientific process of studying nature's models and then abstracting and applying these design principles to human problems .

The Three Levels of Mimicry
Biomimicry can be applied at different levels:
Organism Level: Mimicking a specific organism's form or process. For example, the hydrophobic, self-cleaning surface of the lotus flower has inspired water-repellent coatings , and the water-harvesting abilities of the Stenocara beetle in the desert have inspired technologies for collecting water from fog .
Behavior Level: Mimicking how an organism behaves. For instance, ranchers use adaptive multi-paddock grazing, which mimics the movement of wild bison herds to improve soil health and pasture productivity . Another example is the beaver, an "ecosystem engineer" that creates wetlands, which has inspired approaches to water management and landscape design .
Ecosystem Level: Mimicking the principles of how an entire ecosystem functions. This might involve designing industrial processes that function like a forest, where one system's "waste" becomes a resource for another, creating a circular economy.

Examples Across Fields
Energy & Engineering: Engineers have applied the structural efficiency of a honeycomb's hexagonal cells to create lighter, yet stronger, solar panels. These panels are nearly 48% lighter than conventional ones while maintaining durability . Similarly, the tubercles (bumps) on a humpback whale's fins have inspired more efficient wind turbines and fans .
Agriculture: Farmers are looking to natural systems for regenerative practices. By mimicking the water-storing tunnels of ant colonies with Keyline Design, they can "slow, spread, and sink" rainfall into the soil to improve water infiltration and reduce erosion .
Architecture & Materials: The African elephant's grooved skin, which helps regulate its temperature, has inspired a new kind of heat-regulating stucco for buildings . The structural efficiency of bones and shells also serves as a model for lightweight, strong building designs .

A Critical Note
Biomimicry is more than just copying nature's form. A famous example is the Mercedes-Benz concept car modeled after the boxfish. Although it closely resembled the fish's shape for improved aerodynamics, the prototype proved unstable and was never manufactured . This shows that truly successful biomimicry requires understanding the principles, processes, and system behind a natural form, not just replicating its appearance .

Organizations like the Biomimicry Institute, co-founded by Janine Benyus, are central to promoting this approach.
