Brain gain

Did you know that whenever we perform a new activity completely alien to our routine like using the left hand for brushing instead of the right, our brain forms new nerve cells called neurons that sharpen it and save it from early degeneration?

A two-day workshop on ‘Self Empowerment through NLP’ organized by the Life Positive Foundation on the last weekend of June revealed many such wonderful facts. This workshop, conducted by Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) practitioner and Life Coach Nasreen Khan, saw a medley of participants, from corporate employees to housewives, from the elderly to youthful, and each of them left the programme enriched by the second day.

“Nasreen’s depth and breadth of knowledge, her passion for the subject and her enthusiastic attitude – all left a deep impression. I thank her for explaining the mysteries of NLP in such a simple and practical way,” said Gurgaon-based techie Piyush Kumar.

“It was an impactful workshop that helped me drop a lot of negative emotions which I had been carrying since a long time. I feel happier and lighter. Also the realization that I was judging myself all the time was insightful. This workshop gave me an opportunity to bring light in my life through thinking positive and creating an atmosphere of connectivity,” said Manvee, a participant.

The first day started with exercises that helped people recognise the comfort zone of set beliefs and behaviour patterns. Very subtly, exercises like introducing ourselves with our names pronounced backwards and using the left hand to greet each other, stirred up people in a fun and interactive way.

“The brain does not know the difference between the real and the vividly imagined,” explained Nasreen. She then asked people to perform an exercise to test this theory. Participants paired up, and under Nasreen’s guidance, gave their partners relaxing affirmations where the other person visualised himself or herself getting relaxed. Following this, they were asked to twist their body and to everyone’s utter amazement all save one participant were able to twist themselves more than 180 degrees.

The objective of the workshop was to recognize the dominant side of our brain – left or right – bringing the other on par with the dominant one, being aware of our behaviour patterns, and doing away with the ones that harm us. In short, the workshop handed tools of self-empowerment to the participants. NLP is described as a science of using our brain, our language and our body to get what we want. Nasreen also talked about the four pillars of NLP – setting goals, using your senses, behaving flexibly and building relationships. “Creating a wide variety of behaviors in your kitty to tackle different situations according to the need is a powerful way of empowering yourself,” she said.

Filled with such interactive and insightful exercises, the NLP workshop was a sureshot
success!.
