Metaphorically, it tells us that we imbibe certain values and judgements and other qualities from our parents, whether taught to us or not. Partho, a founding member of Mirambika Free Progress School, Delhi, based on the educational views of Sri Aurobindo and Mother, conducted a seminar on Conscious Parenting at Girgaum Chowpatty, Mumbai, on July 11 and 12. The seminar was organised by Roots, an initiative by two working mothers to nourish young minds.
Roots kids learning the creative way Very often we are not conscious while dealing with our children. We might give them time, attention, and a whole lot of material wants; but until we give them our consciousness, our devoted presence, it holds no value. Children also need to interact with their environment, with nature, not sit in an air-conditioned room. This allows their physical bodies to develop and get a proper understanding of their surroundings. Martial arts helps the child to be self-disciplined and centre himself firmly. One parent at the seminar said that her child sometimes sat in one place and stared at herself, her body, without interacting with anyone or anything. Partho replied that this is the most important part of development, the children are learning to be with themselves, getting in touch with their inner being. This is extremely productive and children should be left alone to themselves, as often as they wish. The root of all problems we face as a global community is that we are not in touch with our inner being. Befriending your child allows him to be more open and comfortable toward you, building a bond of trust.
If children do not develop creativity, intuition, concentration, reasoning skills, exploration skills and the ability to process and understand what they do, then they are not fully developed. Just mental storage of information does not make one a genius.
