The Equanimous Mind; Author: Swami Chidananda; Published by: Fowai publications; Pages: 179; Rs 200

An introduction to human values, this book dwells on a number of subjects that every individual should be clear about. Often, our lack of clarity on these issues leads to misery and conflict. Swami Chidananda, a former monk at the Chinmaya Mission, sheds some light on these issues.

The book talks about thoughts and values that we use every day. We may think that situations arising in this day and age are unique, and haven’t come up earlier. But what has changed is only the outward appearance; the cause of the matter, the underlying emotions are still the same. Wars are still waged because of ego, greed and insecurity, and men still have different personalities for different situations. Maintaining an undisturbed mind during adversity and celebration, like Lord Ram, is what we must strive for, in order to achieve an unshakable bliss.

Leadership skills aren’t just for team leaders or project managers; each person in the group must work toward the same goal, complementing each other’s weaknesses. One’s purpose in life is the most important quest one must embark on. Without this our life has no direction or focus, but meanders from one desire to the next.

The book can seem a bit dry since there aren’t stories or parables to describe the values. Written for a beginner’s level, this book does not have much to offer to those who have been on the path for a while.
