Give birth like a goddess
December 2012
Birthing a child is similar to God birthing the universe, but very few experience this ecstasy while giving birth. The pain and anxiety involved in it takes away the joy.

A birthing room at the sanctuary But if the divinity associated with it can be brought to the fore then it has the potential of becoming the most uplifting and gratifying experience a woman can have. With this in view India’s first birthing sanctuary has been set up in Goa. Founded by Kasia Wierzbicka, a hypno-birthing practitioner from Poland and her husband Ravi Shahi, it promises to revolutionise the birthing process by offering a gentle, holistic, sacred, and safe birthing experience. She is supported in her endeavour by Jacinta Cross, an Australian trained midwife and Jennifer Summerfeldt, a birth activist and writer. The sanctuary creates space for pregnant women, and their family members, to prepare themselves, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, to receive their baby in love.
“The purpose of this unique initiative is to respect and protect the sacred, sexual, physiological, and instinctive qualities of birth,” says Ravi. The centre is armed with experienced, holistic, loving but non-invasive holistic midwifery support to facilitate the experience.
“We want to create a birthing community for healing the earth through healing our own birth,” says Kasia.
Apart from holistic clinical care there are holistic doula (midwife)courses, yoga and sacred dance temple, ceremonies to honour feminine rites of passages (the sacred feminine), programmes and classes dedicated to honour the fathers (the sacred masculine) and community-building retreats.
Located on a piece of beautiful land by the river, the heart of the sanctuary is the birthing centre, with beautiful birthing temples – which are based on the four basic elements water, fire, earth and air.
The expectant mother has the privilege of choosing from many birthing options. They include water birth, where the baby is born into the water, lotus birth, where the placenta is not detached until the baby is ready to disconnect from it, hypno birth, where self-hypnosis helps release fear and to relax, and home births. Hospital births are also possible for emergencies.
At last, an initiative that returns to a woman her power over her body.
