The popular movie, What the bleep do we know!? and Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol, speak about the upcoming field of noetic science, which is a scientific study of spiritual phenomenon. Closer home, the coming together of these two vital fields was the subject of an international conference held in New Delhi.

The Sai International Centre for Human Values recently organised The International Conference on Science and Spirituality: the Growing Interface, in scientific partnership with All India Institute of Medical Sciences and supported by the National University of Educational Planning and Administration.

Among the stimulating ideas and views circulated, was one by Dr Samuel Sandweiss, an eminent psychiatrist from California, who suggested through his paper that scientists develop a science institute for the promotion of a unifying interrelationship between science and spirituality. The initial mission of this institute would be to observe and describe miraculous phenomena and make a serious attempt at communicating its validity and importance to the scientific community so that this body of knowledge is taken seriously.

The contemporary and attention-grabbing subjects discussed at the conference were The Theory of Everything, the Tao of physics, the organic earth, evolution by design, life after death, ageless body, timeless mind, spirituality at the workplace, and new age philosophy. Three books, Sai Baba on Science and Spirituality, Conference Papers, and Readings in Science and Spirituality, containing summaries of the works of important scientists, mystics and physicists, were released at the conference. The conference drew to an end with the resolve that both these streams should be taken as complementary to each other instead of hindering the other’s progress.
