Humanity join hands against adverse climate changes

The Delhi sky on December 10, 2009, was decorated with 2000 sky lanterns as a symbol of hope for the climate change summit at Copenhagen, Denmark. Naga tribal Seno commented, 'Our water is drying and our livestock is dying of strange diseases. Countries have to stop arguing about doing something about climate change and push for renewable solutions.'
Religious leaders from diverse faiths, activists and environmentalists had gathered at the Lotus temple, New Delhi, to participate in this discussion regarding effects of climate change. The participants spoke about the need for “a collective voice against the ongoing exploitation of natural resources'. People from different states of India like Gujarat and Jharkhand had come together to use this platform to voice their concerns about how climatic changes had affected their lives.
Sunita Marmu, a community worker from Jharkand, lamented, “People talk about how climate change will affect lives later but in our village, change is already visible. The local stream which fed our village fields has dried, and our crops have failed in the last two-three years because of drought. Even people have been directly affected as new diseases have been seen.’’
Over 20 community representatives will attend the summit in Copenhagen to present a fair representation of how the climate changes have brought about adverse results for all. Following this event, yet another initiative was launched on December 12 as the Global Day of Action. People from all cities participated to ensure that their voices protesting against the climate deterioration were heard.
On Global Day, the coalition consisting of Oxfam India, Greenpeace, WWF, Indian Youth Climate Network and various others will present a collection of 1.3 million signatures to the PM.
Vinuta Gopal of Greenpeace said, “Governments cannot get away with mere political platitudes, they need to step up to the challenge: (of) people coming together in unprecedented numbers to demand climate justice and action.’’
