Living with Dignity in Delhi
November 2007
'Dignity helped me in getting legal help and they are always ready to offer their assistance in the issues that the elderly face,' says Mrs Prabha Rai warmly, sharing her positive experience with Dignity Foundation, Delhi.
Mr R D Mathur avails of their companionship programme, and finds the people at the centre very warm and friendly while Mrs Thukral waxes eloquently about the assistance provided by the Foundation in listening to her and providing counselling. Her husband is afflicted with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, and she herself is a heart patient. Life is quite challenging, and it is to the Foundation that she turns to for succour.
Dignity was set up to cater to the needs of the elderly, starting with the publication of the magazine, Dignity Dialogue, in 1995 in Mumbai. In a year's time, this organisation grew to add services for the elderly like providing information and support to them, and also enabling them to live productive, meaningful and interesting lives, drawing upon their knowledge, skills and experience. Dignity's two-pronged approach is to free the elderly of insecurity, and to provide support when required. Certainly, the relatively new Delhi chapter too is doing just that. It offers a daycare centre for dementia patients with pick-up and drop facility, counselling, a helpline and a chai masti programmefor bonding and a sense of community.
Considering the vulnerability and increasing isolation of the elderly, one can only echo Mrs Thukral's sentiments: 'The Foundation in Delhi is providing excellent service, and I sincerely wish more and more people benefit from it just as I have.'
