Looking For Love
May 2009
Alka had stepped out for a breath of fresh air, when she noticed two street children playing with a pup. Going closer she realised that the ‘game’ which these kids were playing was to throw the pup at each other.
The poor pup was so terrified each time it was flung into the air that it became absolutely still, not even daring to shiver or whine. Alka immediately stopped the game and rescued the pup, sending the kids off with a severe scolding.
Ananda, who had watched the entire incident and now saw Alka still seething with anger, gently explained the situation to her. He said, “The behaviour of these two children highlights a much bigger concern – that of cruelty traits in young children. A common playground scene is of a group of children playing, when a timid child asks to join in. Immediately the group refuses. ‘You can’t play,’ says the group representative.
“So, what makes children cruel?” asked Ananda. Seeing Alka search around for an answer, he explained, “Very young children below five may not realise the effect of their action or words on others but if a ten-year-old inflicts emotional or physical pain on another child, it is definitely time to pay serious attention to this behaviour. Maybe, the child has not been made to feel proud about anything and therefore finds his self-esteem by putting others down, and seeks attention the only way he knows – by drawing attention to his misdeeds!”
He continued, “So, next time you see a child, be it your friend, your neighbour’s kid or someone from school, being mean, recognise that he or she may be seeking attention and craving love desperately. Think about ways in which he could get positive attention. Make sure such children are consciously included in group activities, which make them feel wanted, and reward them with your praise or friendship whenever possible. Who knows, maybe you can be the one to change a ‘meanie’ to a lifetime buddy with just a little effort and care on your part!”
Having understood the motive behind their cruel action Alka went off to search for the two children whom she had scolded earlier. Maybe they were just looking for love! Apply it: Condemn the negative action, not the person. Maybe you can help him change.
