Patriotism Remixed

Patriotism Remixed

You sang it in your school functions. You stood up in theatres whenever it played.

You heard it on television on August 15, and January 26. The national anthem, until now, has been a melody which becomes a part of our life on certain occasions, arouses a stirring in our hearts, and soon after, we forget all about it. To ensure that this stirring stays, and grows, some of the greatest of musical maestros have come together to create an entire CD called Jana Gana Mana. Lata Mangeshkar, Gulzar, A R Rahman, Kaushiki Chaudhary, are only a few of the notable legends who have sung together, and individually, in this CD.

The powerful words, sung in strong voices, casts a spell on all listeners. One is taken back to the Freedom Struggle, when thousands of men laid down their lives to create a free India. The music, drums and flute, recreates that patriotic fervor that the children of the early 20th Century must have felt as they saw India break itself from British chains, and find its own identity. The emotions with which the singers have sung this soon instills a longing within a listener to come together, join hands, like people of our past once did, and give India freedom. And this time, freedom in its true essence – not just from a foreign invader.
