Put away the old year

Put away the old year

December 2010

Children, the end of the year is near. Isn’t that exciting? A whole shiny new year is waiting just round the corner for you.

But before you charge pell-mell into the New Year, let us tidily put away the old year, just like your mother taught you to put away your toys after you finished playing.

So how do you put away the year? Go through it month after month and recollect all that happened. Perhaps you had a quarrel with a friend or classmate and you are not talking to her. Perhaps you started a new project – let’s say, learning to draw or play badminton, but gave it up in the middle. Perhaps you did really badly in some subject and you instinctively don’t want to look at that subject. again. Perhaps, your father gave you a hiding for something you did or did not do and you are hurting inside.

Make a list of all the people you are not talking to and go and make up with them. In all probability, they are as miserable about not being friends as you are and will be only too happy to make up. If you have stopped something half-way, examine why. Too often we give up learning skills that would make us so much richer as people. Make up your mind to resume it the next year. And do it!

If you have a block about a subject or about being punished, it may be a good idea to speak to your school counsellor about it. If you do not have one at school, just write down everything that you feel about having done badly, what you fear, what people said, how you felt about what they said and so on. Now tear up the letter. It is not meant to be sent to anyone. It is only meant to help you get it out of your chest. There, now you are ready to meet the New Year, with the old year completely put away.
