Spreading the light of yoga
June 2011
Mahatma Gandhi described the human body as the living temple of God. He believed that it was equipped to maintain its health on its own, and it is this belief that has been the guiding principle for the Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN).
The council employs a multi-dimensional approach for propagation of yoga and nature cure. “We are actively engaged in research, education, training, development, publication and informing society about yoga and naturopathy,” says Dr BT Chidananda Murthy, Director CCRYN, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
CCRYN offers 100 per cent grant to premier medical, yoga and naturopathy institutions to conduct clinical research. The body also provides financial assistance for translation and publication of ancient yoga and naturopathy texts and for conducting workshops, conferences and seminars on various aspects of yoga and naturopathy. “We support the institutions technically and monetarily so they can teach people about achieving better health without medicine,” said Dr Murthy. The council also accepts students for its two-year Diploma in Naturopathy and Yoga and Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences programmes, and offers yearly and monthlyscholarships of Rs 1 lakh and Rs 5,000 respectively.
“We attempt to cure the deadliest of diseases with naturopathy and yoga. We have seen remarkable improvements in patients with cancer and AIDS. In cases where a complete cure can’t be expected the patients experience considerable relief. Often, patients are brought in very late when there is little we can do for them,” says Dr Murthy. The council, which runs OPDs across Delhi, Kerala and Haryana, has launched several multimedia campaigns and workshops at the national, state and district levels on yoga and naturopathy for holistic health and living.
