A commemorative postage stamp was released in honour of Late Surendra Nath Jauhar, illustrious freedom fighter, social worker, industrialist and philanthropist.
Stamp in honour of freedom fighter Surendra Nath Jauhar The stamp was released by minister of IT and HRD, Kapil Sibal, at The Mother’s International School in New Delhi, recently.
Presiding over the occasion, chairperson Auroville, Dr Karan Singh, said, “Jauhar was a very affectionate and warm-hearted person. He used to narrate marvellous Indian freedom struggle stories and I enjoyed his company thoroughly. His energy and passion was to be seen to be believed. He had always felt the need of value-based education so he gave away his land to establish Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Delhi, in 1956. The stamp is a tribute and recognition to his intense patriotism, high ideals and universal love.”
The head of Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Sri Aurobindo Education Society and son of Late Surendra Nath Jauhar, Anil Jauhar said, “My father lived an adventurous life, struggling tirelessly against overwhelming odds with an indomitable spirit and unyielding devotion. I hope his exemplary life and work will serve as an inspiration to future generations.”
Affectionately known as Chachaji, Late Surendra Nath Jauhar joined the freedom struggle at the age of 16, in response to a call by Mahatma Gandhi. The first phase of his life was devoted to the cause of freedom for which he made innumerable sacrifices. He was thrown behind bars several times where he braved torture and solitary confinement. The second phase of his life was dedicated to education and spirituality. He became an ardent devotee of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother in 1939.
