The Ethics of Organ Donation
May 2009
Myth: Organ donation is against my religion.
Fact: Organ donation is consistent with beliefs of most religions. Any spiritually inclined individual should realise that the body (encompassing all the organs) is only a temporary abode for the soul. If we can help someone by donating our organs it will only add to our karmic score. Therefore, one must go ahead and donate without any ethical constraints. Organ and tissue donation is a way to help others, after your death, by allowing organs or tissues to be taken from your body and transplanted in someone else’s body. It may save another person’s life. Normal funeral and burial arrangements can proceed even after organs have been donated. As Dada Vaswani says, “Everything is a gift of God. Whatever we give or share with others is God-given. And everything that we have is given to us by God so that we can share what we can with others who are less fortunate than we are.”
