The Yogi of Walden
February 2011
The Yogi of Walden, Author: Sundara Bharadwaj,Pages: 223, Rs 195
Poet, philosopher and ecologist Thoreau was during his lifetime considered an oddball with crazy ideas by most people in his home town of in Concorde, Massachusetts. He was scorned, dismissed and criticised when he was alive, like many pathbreakers in history. This book highlights the influence of Vedic wisdom on Thoreau. His thought was a big influence on Mahatma Gandhi whose introduction to the idea of civil disobedience happened through reading Thoreau's essay on the subject. A book as rich in insights as it is academic in manner.
