When ancient therapies meet modern medicine

Although a reticent and understated healer, Dr M M Alex of the Institute of Ancient Integrative Therapies in Chennai has a reputation that precedes him. It was therefore a rare privilege to be present at his talk called Good Health Today with Modern and Ancient Therapies at the India Habitat Centre, recently.

A noted human life sciences specialist Dr Alex has integrated his wisdom and research of 25 years to successfully merge the concepts of ancient and modern therapies to address the major health issues of today – ranging from diabetes and depression to arthritis and allergy. At the talk he tried to provide practical insights into the roots of ailments and simple but ignored time-tested solutions.

Dr. Alex guided participants through a short meditative exercise consisting of visualising the internal organs of their body, a process that enhanced awareness of the human body. Next on the agenda was a description of the ancient and modern therapies, the components of the human body and even a short film on the impact a modern machine like the MRI has on our bodies.

Dr Alex diagrammatically displayed the body clock, divided into different parts of the day and the function which the body performs during each part. He scientifically validated that consuming a meal late at night was against the natural processing functions of our body and hence would not be digested. Yet another intriguing concept discussed was that of Agni Hotra, a Vedic ritual performed for the healing and purification of the atmosphere. Visual aids helped the participants get a glimpse of this sacred and powerful ritual and also of Dr Alex’s institute amidst serene surroundings. The session ended with some tips on maintaining the natural health of the body without the aid of externalmedication through good posture, right food, exercise and so on.

Dr Alex began his career as an accomplished and celebrated Malayalam film actor. At the age of 26, he felt a strong calling to the field of medicine and gave up his high profile acting career and began a comprehensive personal education journey into human health and medicine. Dr Alex and his Institute have been researching the above at the exclusion of all else, since 1985 (24 years).
