Why life is not easy

Why life is not easy

Isha,” called out Mummy as ten-year-old Isha lay sprawled on the floor in front of the TV, watching Disney Channel intently. “Get up and do your home work.” With a sigh, Isha got up and sat glumly at her desk and opened her schoolbag.

Homework done, she sneaked out some murukkus from the kitchen to munch into as she read her story book, but mummy rapped her knuckles. “You will have dinner in about half-an-hour and I don’t want you spoiling your appetite.” Isha scowled and wheeled out of the kitchen, empty-handed. “Hey, not so fast,” her mother pulled her back. “Wash these cucumbers for me. I want to make a salad. Then set the table.” By the time dinner was served, Isha was in a pensive mood.

Finally, she asked her Dad, who was her hero, “Dad, why do we have to do difficult things? Why can’t life be easy and fun? Why do I have to do homework instead of watching TV all day? Why do I have to help mummy in the kitchen instead of reading a story book? Why do I have to eat dull things like rice and dal instead of having chips and murukkus and pizzas? It doesn’t make sense.”

Her father laughed, “That’s a wonderful question, sweetie,” he said, patting her on the back. “The truth is that we are here on planet earth to grow. We are meant to become better students, daughters, and sisters; to become more disciplined, hard working, generous, patient, loving and caring. The more we grow, the more confident we get; when we become more disciplined, or do more for others, we become a lot happier. The more we put into living, the more life we get. If we only do what is easy, how will we learn anything?'

Isha looked thoughtful. “The more I grow, the happier I get. Is that it?”

“That is it,” said Dad. 'True success is not about getting money or fame. It is about how much you have grown as a human being.'

Children, it may not be fun to do difficult things but the more you learn to do them, the happier you will be.
