Women wisdom and wellness
December 2012
Finding a woman who is as concerned about her health as she is of her family’s, is a tough task. For a woman, her health ranks way below in her priority list than that of her husband, children and other family members.

ELSA – W3 was one such step in this direction. Alumnae of Lady Shri Ram College (LSR), Delhi University, came together to celebrate the power of women, wisdom and wellness through a cultural festival held in the college campus recently. The fest opened with the customary lighting of lamps by the eminent speakers of the day, Dr. Nagendra Nagpal (Director, Vedic Nature Cure), Dr. Ishi Khosla (Nutritionist and Director, Whole Foods) and Dr. Harmala Gupta (Founder, CanSupport and Founder-President, Cancer Care India) along with principal, Ms Meenakshi Gopinath.
Ms Gopinath hailed the idea of stringing women, wisdom and wellness in the same thread, and hoped that it would lead towards a healthy society. “Woman, being the fulcrum of the family, is the most significant member of the household as well as of society. To build a healthy society, its females must be physically and mentally sound,” she said.
Dr. Nagendra Pal Singh beautifully illustrated the importance of a healthy and fit body by comparing it to a temple which needs to be kept clean in order to retain the presence of God in it. Stressing on the fact that skin is the true reflector of a person’s personality, Dr. Singh highlighted the importance of skin care using natural products and not succumbing to advertising gimmicks. Dr. Harmala Gupta too evinced concern that women do not have time for themselves. ‘Most tend to ignore their body’s plea for attention, until too late,’ she said. Dr. Gupta, a cancer survivor, is an example of overcoming chronic and incurable diseases by paying attention to the body’s call. According to her, staying healthy is very simple. You just have to know yourself and listen to your body. “We are our own best defense,” was her sound advice.
Dr. Ishi Khosla spoke on the importance of proper diet for a person’s well-being. Her constant plea was “think beyond looking good; try to be fit.” Dr. Khosla shared her thoughts about physical as well as emotional health, and ways to keep them sound.
In keeping with the theme of wellness, various activities were conducted across the campus. There was a Zumba-Pilates-Bollywood performance by Body Temple group, which was followed by classical dances by the LSR students. Ms Gopinath, the principal, reinforced the importance of a healthy life, by telling her students, “Have a straight spine and everything else falls in place.”
