Work and worship

Spirituality is not accepted in B-schools and the corporate world. It is high time we merged spiritual practices with business practices to develop conscience in individuals.

Spirituality will help in controlling and purifying the part of greed in the system,” says Dr Sunita Singh Sengupta, Professor of Organisational Behaviour at the Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi, and the founder chairperson of Integrating Spirituality and Organisational Leadership (ISOL) Foundation.

She adds, “ISOL Foundation is a virtue-based, not-for-profit organisation promoting trust and compassion at the workplace to create non-violent, non-exploitative and sustainable organisations.”

ISOL promotes the importance of working in integration and not in isolation. “The principle is not to compete with other people. The Bible, Vedas, Guru Grantha Sahib, the Quran and all the scriptures talk about illuminating the hearts and how you can be a good human being,” explains Dr Sengupta.

Dr Sengupta says, “One of my daughters is an ardent devotee of Jesus and the other is a staunch Krishna follower. All religions help in promoting compassion, love and truth. Religion is a pure instrument to connect with the Divine. It teaches us to be conscious of our own deeds and not to play manipulative strategies.”

She says, “I flavour my lectures with the insights of Indian scriptures and promote critical and experimental thinking among students. I teach my students to unlock the mind and challenge what they see around, which, in turn, will increase their critical ability. If you work on assumptions then you will be locked in your own world.”

Dr Sengupta is planning to flag off two seminars seeking to promote and stimulate holistic wisdom in New Delhi. They will be held jointly by ISOL Foundation and the Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi.

One is on Indian Business through Ages on December 12-13, 2011, which aims to have an understanding of the ancient roots of modern business practices in India. The other is the rather ponderously titled National Conference on The Ontology of Consciousness Integrating Mathematics, Physics and Spirituality on December 15-17, 2011 which will explore the relationship between physics and metaphysics, origins of mathematics in Sanskrit, Vedantic perspectives of mind and consciousness and systematic spiritual practices for the realisation of real intelligence.
