Bhangra as a dance form is known worldwide for its zest, vigor and vitality. But do you know that it has reached a new level of sophistication by being used as a workout regimen? The Masala Bhangra Workout is an exercise dance routine that is a blend of the high-energy folk dance of bhangra and cardiovascular moves.

Says Shalini Bhargava, its master trainer in India, “Masala Bhangra was conceptualised 15 years ago by Sarina Jain in USA. It is now that it is coming to India.”  An AFAA (The Aerobics and Fitness Association of America) approved fitness programme, it is fun and suitable for people of all ages. Adds Shalini, “Bhangra is a very high energy, high intensity dance form which  you cannot do for more than 15 minutes as a stretch. But in Masala Bhangra you can do it for 60 minutes, have fun and burn calories since it has been moulded in such a manner by Sarina.”

Hearteningly, one need not be a dancer to be eligible for Masala Bhangra. It is a group activity, which burns more than 500 calories an hour. Says Sudesh Malik, a Mumbai based filmmaker, “I joined Masala bhangra workout four months ago and now I am addicted to it. I am a  karate expert who loves gymming but the beauty of Masala Bhangra is that since you are dancing you do not realise the effort. My stamina levels have gone up and I have also lost 10 kgs in the process. Though I am a non-dancer I enjoy it.”

The Masala Bhangra workout works on the cardiovascular system, strengthens and tones the entire body and also enhances the mood and positive feelings, thereby working on the mind as well.

Today, Masala Bhangra is one of the top five workout videos in the US. It is the only Indian fitness workout besides yoga, that is internationally recognized.
