Youth for yoga
February 2013
Nestled in the gentle undulating hills of Lonavala, Kaivalyadham is a laidback retreat 120 kms from Mumbai.

Performing the puja at the International yoga conference Set up by Swami Kuvalayananda in 1924 to carry out scientific research, training and therapy in yoga, this institute has remained true to his vision of seeing yoga as a body-mind-spirit discipline and has not diluted the form of yoga it propagates. Kaivalyadham recently hosted the seventh International Conference on Yoga and the Youth – Classic and contemporary perspectives. With more than 1000 delegates from across the world, this conference brought 2012 to an informative and healthy close for many. The spheres of academics, research and spirituality were well represented with accomplished masters from these areas participating in the conference. Multiple parallel sessions of discourses, panel discussions and workshops kept people thoroughly engaged for three-and-a-half days. In addition to the structured sessions, there were many informal spaces where people engaged in one on one and small group interactions. Some wonderfully diverse perspectives emerged and horizons broadened. The residential nature of the conference helped people immerse themselves in the core themes and for those who chose to learn, the scope was wide.
The centre also has some authentic treatments based on ayurveda and naturopathy. Some participants did see this as an opportunity to de-stress their bodies and get some treatments. The delegates, guests and invitees merged to co-create some wonderful learning spaces seamlessly. If we see our body as a musical instrument, then the event lived up to Swami Kuvalyananda’s view of Veena Yoga. “A veena gives exquisite heavenly music only when its strings are attuned adequately and played on harmoniously. One of the principal meanings of yoga is sangati ie, harmony. Joy of positive health depends upon harmony between all bodily and mental functions,” he used to say.
