Youth led projects in Mongolia tackle air pollution

Air pollution is one of the most serious environmental challenges facing Mongolia, particularly in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar. During the cold winter months, the city experiences extremely low temperatures, and many households in the traditional ger districts burn coal and other fuels for heating. This contributes to heavy air pollution and creates health risks for residents. In response, young people across Mongolia are increasingly taking action through innovative projects, awareness campaigns and community initiatives.

Youth-led environmental projects are helping to raise awareness about the causes and effects of air pollution. Students and young activists organize school campaigns, public discussions and social media activities to encourage people to understand the importance of clean air. By using platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, young Mongolians can reach large audiences and communicate environmental messages in ways that are accessible to their generation.

Some youth groups are also focusing on practical solutions. Young innovators and students have explored ideas involving cleaner heating systems, energy efficiency, renewable energy and improved waste management. These projects demonstrate that young people are not only concerned about pollution but are also interested in developing solutions that can be applied in their own communities.

Schools and universities play an important role in supporting these efforts. Environmental clubs give students opportunities to conduct research, organize clean-up activities and participate in discussions about climate change and air quality. Through these activities, students gain knowledge about environmental problems while developing leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills.

Young people have also contributed to campaigns encouraging the government and communities to take stronger action. They have called for greater investment in clean energy, better public transport and policies that reduce dependence on polluting fuels. Youth participation is important because young people will live with the long-term consequences of environmental decisions made today.

Technology has become another powerful tool. Some youth-led initiatives use air-quality monitoring devices and digital platforms to collect and share information about pollution levels. Making air-quality information easier to access can help communities understand when pollution is particularly dangerous and encourage people to take protective measures.

However, tackling Mongolia's air pollution problem requires more than individual action. The issue is connected to poverty, housing, energy access, urban planning and Mongolia's harsh winter climate. Young people's projects can raise awareness and test new ideas, but long-term progress also depends on cooperation between communities, businesses, scientists and government institutions.

The growing involvement of Mongolian youth offers an important source of hope and innovation. By combining education, technology, activism and practical solutions, young people are helping to make air pollution a public issue that cannot be ignored. Their efforts show that youth can play a meaningful role in protecting the environment and building healthier communities. With continued support and opportunities to participate in decision-making, Mongolia's young generation can contribute significantly to the country's efforts to achieve cleaner air and a more sustainable future.

We wish them all the best.
