Lessons from Anna

Lessons from Anna

The successful fast by Anna and his men to pass the Jan Lokpal bill has many lessons for us.

1. India will awaken when it finds a leader capable of inspiring her. This simple, not very educated man from one of India’s innumerable villages won over our hearts because of his authenticity, integrity and impeccable reputation.

2. Determination, commitment and allegiance to a selfless cause empowers the activist and eventually wins over the opposition. Mahatma Gandhi’s ‘soul force’ is in action here.

3. Social networks, mobiles, and other aspects of the information technology have made it much easier for the people to be united. And therefore it will be much more difficult for governments to exploit us.

4. We are not willing to be ‘chalta hai’ anymore. Our national credo is changing and we are now actively pulling up our socks and demanding higher standards in public probity, accountability and governance.

5. The energy and enthusiasm of the youth when harnessed to a good cause can create sizeable change. India increasingly looks as if it is in good hands.
