The Netherlands Donates to Preserve Tropical Forests

These valuable forests are threatened by deforestation, illegal logging, mining, forest fires and the expansion of agriculture.

Why Tropical Forests Need Protection

These forests also play an important role in fighting climate change.

Protecting tropical forests is therefore essential for maintaining ecological balance, preserving wildlife and reducing the effects of global warming.

The Netherlands Pledges $500 Million

In a significant development, on 26 October 2026, the Dutch government announced plans to contribute up to $500 million over ten years to the Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF), an international initiative designed to provide long-term funding for tropical forest conservation.

The proposed contribution will help build a financial mechanism that rewards countries for keeping their forests standing rather than clearing them for short-term economic gain.

The facility aims to develop a fund worth $125 billion, including approximately $100 billion from private investors. Its returns would support countries that successfully conserve tropical forests. The initiative could potentially help protect between 800 million and 900 million hectares of tropical forest.

How Will the Funding Help?

The proposed funding mechanism is intended to make forest protection economically worthwhile. Countries that maintain their forests could receive regular payments, subject to monitoring and conservation requirements.

Satellite images and other monitoring methods will help assess whether forests are being protected. The proposed payment rate is approximately $4 per hectare annually, although the actual amount will depend on the facility's final arrangements and performance.

Importantly, Indigenous peoples and local communities are expected to benefit from this initiative. These communities have traditional knowledge of forest ecosystems and often play a vital role in protecting biodiversity. Providing them with financial resources can support sustainable livelihoods while reducing pressure to exploit forests for survival.

International Cooperation for a Greener Planet

The Netherlands is joining other countries, including Brazil, Indonesia, Norway, Germany and France, in supporting the international effort. The World Bank is playing a central role in developing the facility, which is expected to become operational after further preparations, potentially by mid-2027.

However, the initiative's success will depend on securing sufficient investment, establishing transparent rules and ensuring that payments reach the countries and communities protecting forests. Long-term monitoring and accountability will be essential.

Conclusion

The Netherlands' proposed contribution of up to $500 million represents an important commitment to international forest conservation. By linking financial rewards to the preservation of tropical forests, the initiative seeks to make environmental protection a lasting economic priority.

Protecting tropical forests is not simply about saving trees. It means safeguarding wildlife, supporting Indigenous communities, preserving water cycles and reducing climate risks for future generations.

The initiative demonstrates how international cooperation and innovative financing can contribute to a greener and more sustainable world. If successfully implemented, it could become an important model for encouraging countries to conserve nature while pursuing economic development.

We wish them all the best.
