Chicken Soup for the Soul – True Love, Author: Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen and Amy Newmark, Published By: Westland,Pages: 395, Rs 295
Love, they say, like God, is in the details. All the stories in this book delight, stir and surprise with their wonderful variety, and each story within the book’s covers celebrates the magic of the ‘boy meets girl’ theme in great detail. The book opens with a section titled ‘How we met.’ The first story in the book: A woman meets a man in her friend’s house who wears horribly coordinated clothes and stutters uncontrollably when he talks to her. She decides that he is mentally challenged. Four months later they are married. She learns that he is colour blind, which explains why his clothes are so badly coordinated. He tells her that he stuttered because looking at her made him extremely nervous. He tells her he had never seen anyone as beautiful as her. She falls in love with him all over again. Sections on dating (Adventures in Dating), on experiencing the He/She is IT! (Meant to be), proposals, weddings and keeping love alive follow. My favourite story in this section: An only daughter finally decides to marry in her 30s and invites disruption into her regimented life. “Before marriage, my mirrors stayed clear and shiny. Now I found smudges on the bathroom mirrors, only minutes after the cleaning service performed its magic,” she explains. She gets all worked up with the smudges and asks him, “Do you know whose fingerprints those are?” “Yes.” “Well, whose fingerprints are all over this clean mirror?” she repeats. “Honey, those are the fingerprints of the man who loves you,” says her husband. The poor girl is understandably so stunned that she is speechless. To sum it, the stories make for great reading because it is all stuff that contributes towards making life so beautiful. A heart-warming read for lazy summer afternoons and a good book to gift.
